Small Business Saturday: Closet Space

Our Small Business Saturday blog series continues with Closet Space LLC. Closet Space is owned by Trista Born and Keri Collins. These two started young in the equine industry with local shows and 4-H shows. They moved up to AQHA shows, which they still compete in today.

Closet Space is a mobile boutique specializing in the resale of new and used horse show clothing. This gives others the opportunity to own quality show clothes at lower prices. They also off causal apparel (including Kimes Ranch Jeans), accessories and home goods. Closet Space started in 2010. The name of the business essentially means exactly what they are doing.

“Our name was created off of the idea that we were selling our show clothes, which in turn gave us space in our closet,” Born said. “Closet Space seemed like the perfect name.”

Running your own business has its perks and difficulties. Born and Collins have been through the ups and the downs over the past decade. They gave great advice for others wanting to start their own business.

“We have so many favorite parts,” Collins said. “Meeting new people and seeing our friends at all of the shows is one of the best parts. We enjoy helping customers find the perfect outfits, whether it is a new show jacket or a perfect pair of jeans.”

“Being a mobile store has its own set of challenges,” Born said. “Facing the elements can be one of the toughest, between extreme heat, rain and sometimes even snow. Traveling down the road can have its setbacks with flat tires, traffic, construction and more. You just never know. It is always an adventure. Be prepared to put in long hours and be flexible. It won’t always go your way, but with the right attitude you can truly make the best of any situation and have fun while doing it.”

The duo has had great success selling Kimes Ranch apparel. They enjoy seeing people become repeat customers and continue to buy more jeans.

“It is really neat to see how complimentary the jeans are on all shapes and sizes,” Collins said. “They truly sell themselves once the customer tries on a pair. It never fails, once they get one pair they always come back for more!”

Born and Collins are very grateful for the opportunity to own their own business. They are excited to see what the future holds for Closet Space LLC.

“We like to focus on the future instead of thinking about the past,” Born said. “We figure the past is already done, so why not focus on what is ahead of us and what exciting new ideas we can bring to our customers. We just want to thank all of our amazing customers and clients who make this journey possible. We appreciate all of your support and look forward to seeing all of you at the next show!”
